The Efficacious Grace of the Holy Spirit (Regeneration)

The regeneration of the believer is accomplished by the work of the Holy Spirit, who imparts the divine life and nature to the believer so that he becomes a child of God, desiring to please God (II Corinthians 5:17). Through the regeneration process the efficacious grace work of the Holy Spirit effectively moves men to believe in Jesus Christ as Savior. The efficacious grace work of the Holy Spirit involves regeneration (Greek word paliggenesia) which means “born again” (Titus 3:5).

The Bible refers two types of baptisms water baptism and Spirit-baptism. Spirit-baptism is an important work of the Holy Spirit by which believers are brought into union with Christ and into union with fellow believers (I Corinthians 12:13). This miraculous event happens at the conversion of the individual.   The Apostle Paul uses the illustration of one body to show believers functioning in mutual dependence on one another for spiritual growth. This is vital to the growth and maturity of the body of Christ. Without the Holy Spirit’s work of Spirit-baptism there would be cacophony in the body of Christ.   The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is associated with Spirit-baptism.

This inward work of the Holy Spirit enables us to have a personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit which the Old Testament believers didn’t experience. Generally speaking the assurance of our salvation is based on our faith in the death and resurrection of Christ.   Furthermore, the assurance of our salvation is based on the Holy Spirit’s testimony from within our hearts.

In conclusion, the efficacious work the Holy Spirit is to believers which includes: regeneration, indwelling, filling, baptism and sealing.  The Holy Spirit has a common grace ministry to unbelievers which includes: restrain, conviction and benevolence.
